Mountain Travel and Rescue Course November 19th 7:30am to 5:00pm (Bromley Mountain-First Aid Room and Bart Center) A great way to increase your knowledge base and expand your comfort zone, the Mountain Travel and Rescue course is filled with information that will help you operate and travel more safely in the often harsh environment we work in. Learn to assist a search and rescue team, including possible overnight operations, along with navigation, survival skills, and basic search and rescue exercises. A great course for all of us, particularly those who ski the back woods. There is a nominal fee for this course. NSP members: $12.50 Non members:$20.00. What: Mountain Travel and Rescue (MTR) Level 2 course is an elective course for NSP patrollers who have an interest in expanding their knowledge in backcountry travel and rescue procedures. This course is also open to members of the public with the same interests.
When: Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 am January 28th – 4:00 pm on the 29th and Friday through Sunday, 8 am February 24th - to 3:00 pm, on February 26th
Where: Northfield Mountain, Northfield, MA and the White Mountain National Forest, Mt. Moosilauke Warren, NH, via Old Carriage road trail.
Prerequisites: Mountain Travel & Rescue 1 and Avalanche Level 1 (Avalanche may be waived with consent of the instructor) NSP courses or equivalent as determined by Eastern Division MTR supervisor. Complete Pre-course material assignments and have essential equipment required for field exercises.
Manuals: An NSP MTR manual is not included in the course fee and must be purchased separately. Contact course coordinator if you are not an NSP member.
Logistics: Session 1 Class will begin promptly at 8:00am; we recommend that you plan on arriving at about 7:30-7:45am. You will need to bring a notebook and a pencil to take notes. Students should be prepared to work through the lunch period if needed. Student must bring all equipment and be prepared for overnight camping plus classes in the outdoor environment. Pack and inventory all personal and group equipment using check list in appendix of MTR manual (page 147) Final packing to be conducted during class. The class will go continuously until 3:30 pm on Sunday.
Session 2 Trail head departure NLT 8:30 am 26 February for continuous field exercise until 2:30pm 28 February more details provided at Session 1.
Cost: The cost of the course is $160.00 NSP member and $167.50 non-NSP member. Checks should be made out to “ NH Region NSP” and received by the course coordinator not later than Sunday, January 22, 2012, Class size limited to 10 students, registration not complete until check is received.

Agenda: The MTR2 course is made up of 17 lesson topics. These lessons cover topics including Personal Survival, Travel, Back Country Considerations, and Search and Rescue skills. These are all reinforced with an overnight camping exercise and three day field extended exercise with overnight camping for Navigation, Emergency Rescue Techniques, and Search and Rescue.
Completion: When completed you will have the knowledge to continue building skills and become a member of a Search and Rescue organization. This is an intermediate level course and you are encouraged to continue with additional education in the skills taught in this course through either the NSP or another outdoor education organization. Registration is required no later than January 30, 2012 For patrollers of all levels, this two day S&T course will help you improve your skiing, riding, and toboggan handling ability. Aside from being a lot of fun, you will come away with a new sense of confidence from working and focusing on the skills that help make you a better patroller. You will enjoy some great skiing, riding and sled training on a wide variety of terrain and snow conditions. This is a great way to boost your skill set, expand your comfort zone, and help you feel more comfortable in virtually every situation on the mountain. Led by experienced patrollers who really know their stuff, you will find this course to be exactly what you’d expect. Planned activities include:A Women’s Clinic, Alpine Ski, Snowboard, Telemark, and Toboggan Enhancements, with Senior and Certified Level Training for prospective new candidates.
